A BTech student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur was found dead in his hostel room on Monday, police said.
He first cut his wrists, then hanged himself in his hostel room. Police found a suicide note in the room, which read, “Sorry Everyone…I…”

The student has been identified as Jai Singh Meena (26), a resident of the Ajmer district in Rajasthan. He was staying in Room No. 148 of Block-2 of a hostel on the IIT Kanpur campus and was enrolled in the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering.
According to police, fellow students informed the institute administration and authorities after the door of Meena’s room remained locked for a long time. When a team of the Kalyanpur police station arrived and broke open the door, the student was found unresponsive inside the room. A note was also recovered from the spot.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Family members are expected to reach Kanpur on Tuesday, after which further formalities will be completed, police officials said.
Meena had joined IIT Kanpur in July 2020 and was described by the institute as a bright and sincere student. The institute expressed deep condolences over his death and said it is extending support to the bereaved family and students.
The police have initiated proceedings in the matter and said further investigation is underway.
